Wairau Wetlands is now open to be enjoyed. This $2.2m Healthy Waters Wetland creates a connection from Tristram Ave through to Link Dr in Wairau Valley.

The old concrete line channels have been removed and replaced with the newly constructed walkways and pedestrian bridges. This new infrastructure project will improve water quality and stream habitat of native fish while significantly improving the visual landscape of the area.

The wetlands will help filter the stream water before it discharges out to sea at Milford Beach. The risk of flooding and damage to the Wairau Valley is also greatly reduced. The public artworks at Wairau Wetlands are by artist Elke Finkenauer, who imagined the two-part steel sculpture that is a prominent feature of the wetlands. The sculpture reflects the timeline of the water as it moves of its journey through the valley.

This project encompasses Auckland Council’s new approach to storm water projects by creating healthy, open and more natural waterways that harmonise within their environment.
