/Monthly report for the period 11 September to 9 October 2017
Highlights and Significant Issues
Kaipatiki Local Board Plan is approved
The Kaipaitki Local Board Plan for the three years 2017 to 2020 was unanimously approved by the local board at our business meeting on 20 September. The local board appreciate the input from our community into the plan. We look forward to working to deliver this strategic plan over the rest of the term.
A copy of the Plan can be downloaded here.
Rawene Carpark land slip
On Monday 9 October, a significant amount of land from the Rawene Carpark slipped down onto the Rawene Carpark Reserve. Auckland Transport have assumed responsibility for the site.
Members of the board were notified of cracking in the carpark by the Birkenhead Business Assn on 10 August. Auckland Transport were immediately notified. A site visit by myself along with fellow board members John Gillon and Kay McIntrye also confirmed for us that there was some increased cracking. At our board meeting of 16 August the KLB resolved:
That the Kaipātiki Local Board:
e) is concerned about damage and possible subsidence to the carpark that appears to have worsened during the period of construction of the neighbouring Rawene Road developments, and requests that mitigation is actioned and any related compliance breaches are enforced.
f) requests that the above resolutions be forwarded to the Chief Executive of Auckland Council and the Chief Executive of Auckland Transport for their information and action.
Council officers had met onsite a number of times and on 20 September a decision was made by Auckland Transport to fence off a section of Rawene Carpark that showed the signs of cracking. A geotechnical report was initiated and monitoring was underway.
Fortunately, because of these actions, no persons or vehicles were injured or damaged as a result of the slip on Monday 9 October.
The concerns are now for the immediate public safety of all those in the surrounding area. I have requested an update from Auckland Transport to clarify their processes.
There is concern for the loss of parking in the area and the economic impact this will have on the local businesses. Local Board members will be attending a briefing from Auckland Transport on 11 October. We await further updates from Auckland Transport, as they continue to secure the site.
