Storm Damage – Heavy Rain event Monday 21 March 2022
Following up with our businesses and organisations, the Northcote Town Centre did experience some very heavy water flows during the heavy rain in March. Fortunately, there is no damage to the art at NorthArt Gallery, but there was surface water which required mopping and an airing out of the gallery.
Staff at Northcote Library were very much hands on with quite a flood around our building. Library Manager Karen Walters said, the carpark was badly affected, and we only just got our vehicles out in time before they would have been overwhelmed! We had to close to ensure the staff and facility were safe and fit for use. We have some minor flood damage in our workroom.
Thank you to all the staff who responded so quickly to get the library reopened, who sandbagged the doors and were up to their knees in the carpark area.
Climate Action Plan Hui - 24 March 2022
Kaipatiki Local Board members and community were hosted by Kaipatiki Project to reflect upon our local board Climate Action Plan. The plan will provide a roadmap for how as a community we can implement low-carbon (mitigation) and climate-adaptive (adaptation) responses. The plan focuses on local initiatives that the local board can support and advocate for, and potential help fund. The goal of the workshop was to provide a stocktake of our existing activities, engage with our key stakeholder groups as we work to develop our Climate Action Plan for Kaipatiki.
National Policy Statement – Urban Development
The National Policy Statement on Urban Developm (NPS UP) and the Resource Management (Enabling Housing Supply and Other Matters) Amendment Act are of considerable interest to our community. In order to enable the Intensitication Planning Instrument (IPI), a major change is requred to the Auckland Unitary Plan. This work is required to be finalised for public notifcation by 20 August 2022. Between now and then the community is be asked for their input. Of particulary interest for Kaipaitki is the Special Character Overall which is being address as an Other Matter.
Local Baord members are collaborating across Auckland to better understand the issues, to share knowledge and to better reflect the local and regional Built Heritage in our formal feedback which will be prepared in the coming months.
Northcote Heritage Installation
So much has changed in Northcote since it was farmland in the 1040’s. Eke Panuku have installed images of Northcote from many years ago in the current locations of the original images. Take a walk around Northcote Town Centre and see how much has changed. The small Pearn Place tree has certainly grown a great deal in the last 60 years!
Eke Panuku street performance – 19 March 2022
Back to Square One is an inspiring street performance written by Anders Falstie-Jensen and performed by Margaret-Mary Hollins. Reflected on the distances and experiences of Covid Lockdown, we are drawn into the lives of a European Grandmother and her Auckland based grandson.
This town centre activation was supported by Eke Panuku.
NorthArt exhibition – Wahine Maori: The Art of Resistance 13 March to 15 May
One of the most significant exhibitions for Wahine Maori is showing at NorthArt Gallery over the next two months. This exhibition reflects the views of the individual artists, not those of the NorthArt staff or Board. Funded through Creative New Zealand, this exhibition shares many personal stories and perspectives.
Zion Reserve
March’s heavy rains have continued to erode the path at Zion Reserve in Birkenhead, causing an unsafe mess of the hogan path. Repairs have been requested to improve the access to this reserve on the Highbury Bypass.
Property Maintenance and Nuisance Bylaw – Regulatory Hearing – 24 March 2022
Presenting alongside Devonport-Takapuna Local Board Chair Ruth Jackson, we presented our board’s shared views on the Property Maintenance and Nuisance Bylaw. The case study of a property in Glenfield was shared as a picture tells a thousand words.
Marlborough Reserve
Our communtiy, especailly our young people are making the most of the wonderful weather and enjoying Marlborough Park. Weekends have been particularly busy with all the sports and play equipment filled with young play makers. It’s great to see people out and enjoying themselves.
The rubbish bins are overflowing, and are surrounded by neat piles of rubbish. This is has been brought to the attention of staff, with a request for an update to the installation of a Big Belly Bin which has a compression mechanism.
Birkenhead Furniture
The sun and weather have not been kind to the street furniture in Birkenhead. This has been reported to Auckland Council staff to request some much needed attention.
