New seating, a retaining wall at the carpark end of the site, and an access ramp from the carpark to the pool and skate park will be added at a later date as part of stage two works.

“It’s exciting for Birkenhead and our area’s young people,” says Kaipātiki Local Board Chair Danielle Grant.

“The new design, co-created with local skaters and Skateboarding New Zealand, will provide an improved range of features for different skill levels within the existing site.

“There will also be some much-needed shade at the site – it can get extremely hot over summer.”

Weather permitting, stage one works are expected to be complete in October and the skate park will open shortly afterwards.

Access to the leisure centre and pool will be maintained at all times during construction.
