Netball strengthened on the North Shore
/Last weekend, newly completed netball courts at Glenfield College on Auckland’s North Shore were opened by Kaipātiki Local Board along with representatives from Netball North Harbour and Glenfield College.
The new competition grade facilities will enable children living in the surrounding areas of Glenfield, Birkenhead, Birkdale, Beach Haven and Bayview to play locally.
There are 22 teams from six local schools now participating the in the new Glenfield Junior Netties Competition.
In June 2018, Kaipātiki Local Board committed $88,150 in funding to enable Glenfield College to act as a satellite netball venue.
The funding has also enabled students from Glenfield College to get involved in coaching, refereeing and leadership development as part of the competition.
The project compliments the existing netball delivery network that runs competitions for similar aged children at Westlake Girls High School and Albany’s Pinehurst School.
Kaipātiki Local Board Deputy Chair Danielle Grant says the need has grown steadily over a number of years.
“It was becoming increasingly clear there was a gap in provision for the communities living across Kaipātiki. It meant people living in Kaipātiki were having to travel considerable distance to access and participate in junior grade netball.”
“Working with Netball North Harbour and Glenfield College to deliver a new junior netball competition has been absolute pleasure, and a no-brainer,” says Grant.
"It will also provide improved facilities for Glenfield College students, along with the rest of our community who are invited to access the facilities free of charge during after school hours.”
Kaipātiki Local Board would like to thank Netball North Harbour for their support, along with Auckland Council's Governing Body who contributed $56,000 last year as an operational subsidy for Netball North Harbour through its Environment and Community Committee.
Auckland Council also provided project management support to oversee all physical works undertaken at Glenfield College.
